Okay, so, I’m gonna throw this question out here — I probably won’t get a sensible answer, considering who I’m directing it to, but we’ll give it a shot anyway.
Okay. POP QUIZ, hotshots!
When you guys look at Dean and see him in this jacket…
Who’s jacket is this? Is this John’s jacket or is this Dean’s jacket?
If you said John, you’d technically be correct. But Dean’s wearing it, now. That makes it his jacket.
Now I know just the sight of Cas makes you want to shit your knickers with rage, but I don’t give a shit. I’m trying to make a point, here.
Now, here’s Cas. As you can see, he’s wearing a trenchcoat. That trenchcoat was the one that Jimmy Novak put on when he decided to step outside his house in the middle of the night and offer himself up to Cas to use as a vessel.
Does that make the trenchcoat Jimmy’s or Cas’s?
Answer: it was once Jimmy’s but, much like with John’s jacket, this coat belongs to Cas, now.
Now - and this next one, I know, is going to be a hard one, but just bear with me… ‘cause, again - got a point I’m trying to make.
This necklace is a necklace that Sam got from Bobby, to give to John. He didn’t give it to John, though - he gave it to Dean.
Dean wears it, but Sam gave it to him. So does that make it Sam’s necklace or Dean’s? That’s right. That means it’s Dean’s. So I’m pretty sure that also means he can do whatever he likes with it, including giving it to his angel, if he wants to. Or throwing it away. He could eat it, and it would still be fine, because it’s his - so he can do whatever he wants with it.
Because, see, the thing is — Sam gave that necklace to Dean because he resented his father for not being there for them and appreciated Dean being there for him. Which, okay, very sweet.
However. It turns out something that had sentimental value was actually useful in a different way. Namely in the search for God. When Dean handed that necklace over to Cas, it stopped being just a symbol of Sam and Dean’s relationship and it became a symbol of hope — hope that they could fix the world, stop the angels from bringing about the legit end-of-the-world apocalypse and keep Sam from becoming Lucifer’s vessel. It was a symbol of a tiny pinprick of light at the end of the tunnel that they wouldn’t have to face off against each other, not even of their own minds, and tear each other apart as Lucifer and Michael.
The significance that you’ve invested in this necklace is understandable, however by investing such a limited scope of significance, you are doing what it symbolizes to you a tremendous disservice.
Because - and I’ve already talked about this in another post, I swear I have - their relationship is worth far more than some silly little magic store doodad on a length of cord. Who they are to each other is worth far more than that. If it came down to losing Sam or losing the necklace, do you seriously think that Dean would take the necklace over his brother? Because that’s basically what you’re insisting. That he should take the symbol over the actuality. Choosing the symbol of a guy he is with practically 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days out of the year, rather than actually choosing the guy who gave it to him. Why does he need such a symbol when Sam is there? Right there, with him? Do you realize, now, how very daft that sounds to us? Even a little?
It’s not Dean that needs the symbol. That’s you guys.
I mean JFC - the necklace’s origins weren’t even revealed until SEASON THREE. Before then, we had no idea why Dean wore the thing all the time, had no idea as to its origins, what it was for, if it even did anything. But the second it turns out it was a last-minute gift from Sam because he didn’t want to give it to John, and ooh wow, huge big deal.
Guys, c’mon. Let’s get real, here.
I’m not saying symbols aren’t important, or that characters don’t have their ‘thing’. But to cling to something like that, when they found out it wouldn’t help in the fight to help them keep Sam safe? Do you really think Dean would do something like that? Because I sure don’t.
For Dean, it was a nice memento, for a while. Then, it became a possible tool to potentially fix their quite-literally-apocalyptic, life or death issue. When it was no longer useful to them, Dean got rid of it. Because it came to represent dashed hopes. For him and for Sam and, yes, even for Cas, because he thought his own father still cared enough to help them put the whole mess to an end.
It was a gift intended for an absent father that was given to a young man who believed in his absent father, who wound up giving it to a son who used it to search for his absent father, who he still believed in.
Believe it or not, as much as you want to make everything about Dean and Sam and ONLY Dean and Sam, it’s not. Because Dean doesn’t need a reminder that Sam is his brother and that he loves him. He’s the one character who takes that kind of thing for granted the LEAST, of the two of them. All this emphasis on insisting on ‘brudders only’ or ‘only Sam and Dean, always’ is pointless. It’s tautology. Because who do they see more, spend time more with, than each other? Demanding they spend MORE time with each other than they do is quite literally impossible. Same goes for the ‘but their BOND’ rubbish. Sam might need a refresher every now and again, but Dean has never forgotten why he’s doing all this or ever forgotten who he has beside him.
If you can’t see them going through things together and fighting for each other and come away from it saying, ‘yeah, they get it’, then I don’t even know. Them being there for each other? Taking care of each other? That’s what counts. That’s what shows them that the other guy cares and that he loves him. Dean selling his soul to save Sam, that’s proof. Sam taking the trials, that’s proof. You don’t need a fucking necklace when you’ve got all that. When you’ve got a guy who’d throw himself in front of any monster for you, who’d kill a good friend just to save you.
Dean doesn’t need the symbol. You guys do. And I’m sorry that their relationship isn’t proof enough for you of how much they love each other. But I guess that’s the whole point. Because, quite frankly, it would never be enough for you. The only way it would ever be enough is if they started fucking on the show and that will never happen. I can promise you that, right now. The writers will hint, they will joke, they will wink, but Wincest will never. happen. on. the. show. Period. It is a fanon ship, and it will remain so.
So, as far as this piece of art is concerned - considering the necklace and what it means? I don’t mind if Cas wears it because I know Dean wouldn’t mind. Because it’s his necklace, to do with as he likes, and it’s also become a symbol of them beating the odds together, in spite of it all.
As for Destiel’s symbol, Cas’s coat, with as much narrative weight as it held for Dean and Cas, I hope that Cas very lovingly folds it up and puts it away and never wears it again — unless, of course, he wants to. Because I don’t need him to need that symbol, because Dean will be right there with him and that’s all that I could ever ask for.

George Takei responds to “traditional” marriage fans.
I love this man, and I’m having a fun time imagining Sulu saying these things
things i know about the year 3000
- not much has changed but people live underwater
- i have a great great great granddaughter and apparently she is doing fine
OH MY GOD NOT THE JONAS BROTHERS
they’re the leading researchers when it comes to the year 3000
they’ve even been there in a flux thing
you used azlyrics didn’t you
I think you’ll find that the correct lyrics are:
Triple-breasted women, swam around town, totally naked.
Busted dudes. Busted.
i think i’d like for cas to get the anti possession tattoo between his shoulder blades
or alternatively this
eyegasm
i want that
